Bronx Park is located in the northern part of New York City, in the borough of the same name. It is a green home in a city where cement and cars are everywhere. This peaceful paradise welcomes laid-back flora and free, gentle fauna.
Bronx Park is a large uninhabited area that is surrounded by a forest and crossed by the Bronx River . It was originally a meeting place for the Siwanoy Indian tribe. It was founded in 1639 by Swedish navigator Jonas Bronck, which explains the current name of the park and the New York borough in which it is located.
Certainly, Jonas Bronck was not only the discoverer of these lands but also the owner when he purchased them from the Dutch West India Company.
This park was built during the 19th century. It was part of a method carried out by individuals concerned with the living conditions of city dwellers.
At that time, the New York Park Association was born (in 1881) and a green housing policy worthy of the title was enacted when the city of New York acquired the land where today’s most important parks are built.
Furthermore, the Bronx borough is also home to various beautiful parks such as Crotona Park, Henry Hudson Park, Hunt’s Level Riverside Park, Macombs Dam Park, Pelham Bay Park, College Forest, and Van Cortlandt Park.
In 1891, the New York Botanical Society built a beautiful botanical garden in a section of Bronx Park where Pierre Lorillard’s old tobacco factory still stands.
In 1898, the Bronx Zoo, Wildlife Conservation Park was inaugurated. Expanded several times over the past century, it is now one of the largest zoological parks in the world. There are over 4,000 species of animals living there. The zoo is home to the famous Rocking Stone, a majestic 30-ton pink granite monolith that dates back to the Ice Age.
As we speak, New Yorkers gather there to enjoy a moment of peace in a quiet park, but also to observe physical activities in dedicated areas: children’s play areas, bike paths, ball fields, tennis courts, hiking trails along the river or golf courses with the famous Mosholu golf course located in Van Cortlandt Park.
Bronx Park may be home to Fordham College, Rose Hill Campus, the long-standing Hall of Fame Museum of Greats, and Yankee Stadium.
As soon as the pleasant and warm weather in New York appears, the barbecue areas are filled with New Yorkers having picnics on Sundays.
