An impressive construction by beneficial art
The Flatiron Construction Building is located at 175 Fifth Avenue in Midtown. Built in 1902, it was the tallest building in Manhattan at the time, a title that was quickly ceded to the skyscrapers that defined the New York City skyline.
The fact that this building is located at the intersection of 23rd Street, 5th Avenue and Broadway explains why the building has only 3 facades and therefore has a triangular shape . It is a charming building inspired by a high-quality art style with parts belonging to classical Greek architecture .
It looks like a Renaissance palace that can be divided into 3 completely different components:
- Raised floor below,
- The central half comprises the majority of the building’s 22 floors,
- The upper half with Greek columns along with the apartment complex was added after the building was built.
This design was signed by architect Daniel Burnham (1846-1912), to whom we owe the design of the city of Chicago. The building was built of metal with a concrete and terracotta cladding . The building was designed for industrial use such as work space rental.
A truly famous work
For a time after its inauguration, the Flatiron Building was home to the New York Times. This event must have impressed the creators of BD Spiderman, as it was in this building that the Everyday Bugle, the newspaper that used the character Peter Parker, was headquartered.
In the movie Godzilla, the building is demolished as the monster roams the streets of New York. In the movie Mr. Popper and the Penguins, Jim Carrey, who plays the movie’s hero, has his real estate office in the Flatiron Building.
