The New York Times Building is a skyscraper located in the Midtown area of Manhattan. The total height of the building, including the antenna, is 319 meters , making it the tallest building in New York .
Founded in 2007, the magazine is sponsored by the New York Times Firm, a prestigious newspaper company.
A truly dynamic skyscraper
The New York Times Building is located at 620 8th Avenue, between 40th and 41st Streets. This neighborhood has seen a lot of development since the mid-2000s. Along with the development of this building, we also saw the emergence of the Hearst Tower.
Le New York Building has an appearance that is not really authentic that we observe in the definition of the straight lines and in the double walls of the facade . In fact, this building is built around a metal structure that forms a series of cables and cross-shaped wires at the level of the large windows.
The building was designed by architect Renzo Piano, who was involved in the construction of the Pompidou Center in Paris and the Paul Knee Center in Bern.
The structure includes a variation of windows equipped with ceramic membranes that act as a photovoltaic filter . This “second skin” allows for an even distribution of natural light .
From the street, you can see what is going on inside the building and vice versa. This voluntary replacement by Renzo Piano contradicts the achievements of current skyscrapers. From the outside, skyscrapers appear lifeless and what goes on inside seems like a state secret.
An inexperienced building
On the ground floor, the building seems to float in space. We enter a large public square with a vegetable garden before entering the building.
Skylights are quite numerous in this building, especially on the floor where the editorial offices of the New York Times and the International New York Times are located .
The technical preparations and tools were certainly aimed at turning this skyscraper into a building that respects its atmosphere .
Double wall systems, automatic shutter systems, dimmable lighting systems or floor-to-ceiling air distribution systems are key options for this sustainable design.
There is also a large backyard on the roof of the building and inside the tower you can stroll through a flower-filled atrium.
New York Times Building in Numbers
Construction of the New York Times Building began in 2004. The dedication ceremony took place on November 19, 2007 .
Overall, the building is over 318 meters tall. The roof stops at 227 meters, on which there is a large glass wall and an antenna.
It is the fifth tallest building in New York after: One World Trade Center, Empire State Building, U.S. Bank Tower and Chrysler Building.
The building has 52 floors . The New York Times Company occupies the first 28 floors. The remaining floors are leased to various companies.
There may be 32 elevators . The auditorium has 378 seats located next to the vegetable garden on the lower level.
You can walk around the vegetable garden and go into the auditorium, but the rest of the building is rented out, you can’t go in there.
