Pier 4 Beach – New York City

Pier 4 Beach – New York City

Pier 4 Seaside Overview

Pier 4 is a sandy beach, perfect for sunbathing or building sandcastles. Swimming or wading is prohibited in this part of Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The design of the beach incorporates revolutionary structures envisioned by ECOncrete that are meant to purely replicate tidal currents. They stretch along the rocky shoreline, with some positioned on the shore to study the park’s marine life and flora. Visitors can also launch non-motorized boats from this location.

Pier 4 Beach is under construction.

Offshore is Chicken Island, an inaccessible nature reserve. Many migratory birds come here to migrate year-round. The island also has three ponds and an osprey platform built to attract large pigeons. A true birdwatcher’s paradise!

On Chicken Island, one can also discover a variety of shrubs, grasses, woods and other native species. Pebbles surround the island to protect the shoreline.

A quiet corner by the water

While not a standard swimming beach, this spot attracts with its spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline and its calming environment. The space was once home to industrial docks, but was renovated in the 2010s as part of the Brooklyn Bridge Park redevelopment.

What is the best way to get there?

To get to Pier 4 Seaside, the subway is probably the most logical answer. Take the R line to Courtroom Avenue or the A/C lines to Extremely Avenue then walk about 10 minutes towards the East River. Tip: Walk or bike along the park to get the best views of the city. When you want to take a ferry, the NYC Ferry will take you to the DUMBO/Fulton Ferry a short distance from the shore.

A quiet stay in the city

Don’t worry, you don’t have to plan a whole day. Pier 4 Seaside is the perfect place to take a quick break while exploring Brooklyn. Grab a guide, sit on the rocks, and let yourself be lulled by the sound of the ocean. And if you have time, take the opportunity to explore the surrounding areas, like the Pier 5 Picnic Peninsula or the charming restaurants of DUMBO .
